Rebels have overtaken Goma!

M23 has attacked Goma.

Ten days ago we were laughing and joking saying we would be back soon in February and people were joking with us.

A FARDC tank moves into a defensive position in Center Ville
"No you need to stay, you are Congolese now! Just change your skin color."

That was just over a week ago. Now, the same streets we used to walk are under heavy fighting.

All reports from our contacts in Goma indicate that the city has been overrun by the rebel group M23.

Virunga Market is rebel held.
Downtown was home to heavy shelling.
Birere was bombed intensively.

Fear has gripped the city. Mass chaos has ensued.

The United Nations have all but ceased operations in Goma. Only a few MONUSCO tanks have remained fighting. Almost all of the 6,000 strong UN forces have rallied to defensive positions within their bases.

FARDC and MONUSCO retreating from forward positions
FARDC is in complete confusion and even launched some bombs into neighboring Gisenyi, Rwanda. The same IDP camp where we saw so much fruit at the large outreach a few weeks ago has since been vacated. Over 18,000 IDPs have moved to other locations either on the streets of Goma or in Mugunga IDP camp. This mass exodus has brought so much confusion. All of our contacts have either been in all night prayer meetings or hiding under their beds.

Lift up our friends, contacts and co-laborers in deep prayer! Your prayers mean something.

We are declaring a Joel 2:15-21 type of prayer.

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. 16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber. 17 Let the priests, who minister before the Lord, weep between the portico and the altar. Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’” 18 Then the Lord was jealous for his land and took pity on his people. 19 The Lord replied to them: “I am sending you grain, new wine and olive oil, enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations. 20 “I will drive the northern horde far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land; its eastern ranks will drown in the Dead Sea and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea. And its stench will go up; its smell will rise.” Surely he has done great things! 21 Do not be afraid, land of Judah; be glad and rejoice.

  1. FARDC has run away from a provincial capital? Can M23 hold Goma? Can FARDC take it back? Can FARDC defeat M23 in Nord Kivu? Praying that God will answer for Congo.
